Sadly, about 75% of Americans above the age of 35 have some type of gum disease. Unfortunately, some people argue that nearly 60% of Americans don’t know what gum disease is or how it can be treated. As you may know, gum disease can cause minor problems in your mouth initially, but if it isn’t addressed, it can cause more severe damage. This severe damage may be irreversible, meaning it’s better to catch gum disease in its early stages
As you may have heard, gum disease is an inflammation of the gums, typically caused by bacteria, plaque, and tartar. Sadly, if gum disease isn’t treated, it can lead to infections in your gums and bloodstream, and can lead to tooth loss.
Fortunately, there are a few ways you can recognize gum disease. For instance, if your gums bleed, are red or swollen, or if you notice consistent bad breath, a bad taste in your mouth, a receding gum line, or even shifting teeth, you may be dealing with gum disease.
Unfortunately, gum disease can be caused by poor oral hygiene, smoking, or poor nutrition. Fortunately, our dentist can examine the health of your teeth, and develop a plan to help you. Luckily, if you brush and floss well, you can stop bacteria from spreading and may be able to reverse gum disease. Similarly, antibiotics may be useful if your gum disease is severe enough.
