What have you heard about your tooth enamel? Did you know that your enamel is actually an extremely strong substance? In fact, enamel is actually the strongest substance in your entire body. Enamel is extremely important because it can help you protect your teeth from tooth decay and similar issues. However, please don’t misunderstand: your enamel can be damaged or worn down by tartar and plaque.

Enamel erosion occurs when your enamel is worn down as part of a chemical acid process. For instance, your enamel could wear down intrinsically, which is typically caused by gastric acid. You may have to cope with this type of erosion if you have acid reflux disease, anorexia, or are pregnant with morning sickness. You could also suffer from extrinsic erosion, which is typically caused by sweet and sugary foods.

There are a few signs of enamel erosion you can watch for. For instance, if your teeth look worn down or are discolored, you could be suffering from enamel erosion. The edges of your teeth may also seem transparent, or you may suddenly experience sensitive teeth.

Fortunately, your enamel can remineralize and build itself up, but there are things you may consider doing to help the process. For example, brushing with a fluoride based toothpaste twice a day and flossing should help. You should also remember to eat a healthy, well balanced diet and limit the amount of sweets you eat.
